Thinking of Tying the Knot?
By Sharon Vlacich
Marriage is a wonderful gift from God, created before the fall of man to be a reflection of the relationship between Christ and His Bride, the Church. Since God intends for marriage to be one of our greatest blessings and knows how deeply it impacts our lives, He has much to say on the subject in His Word.
For those of you who are thinking of tying the knot, here are five questions to ask yourself.
Has your future spouse received Jesus as their Lord and Savior? God commands us not to be yoked together with an unbeliever (2 Co 6:14).
What type of "fruit" is your future spouse bearing in their life? Do they consistently try their best to obey the Word of God? Do they have a true hunger for the things of God? Do they fellowship with other believers? Are they progressing in their Christian walk? Do they deal honestly with others? Do they keep their word? God says we will know a person's character by the fruit they produce (Mt 12:33). We are to be doers of the Word, not just hearers only (Jas 1:22).
Is your future spouse emotionally healthy? We all have issues in our lives, but what we do with these issues is important. Is there something your future spouse, or you for that matter, should be giving over to the Lord?
Is your future spouse financially responsible? How do they handle responsibility? Do they willingly take responsibility for their mistakes or actions? This applies even to areas unrelated to finances.
Finally, even if your future spouse is all of the above in the affirmative, is this the person that the Lord is leading you to marry? God has a perfect plan for each person's life. Before making a lifelong commitment, be sure that this person is the one that is part of God's plan for your life.
