Prophetic Intercession, What it is, and How it Works
By Sharon Vlacich
Most people have heard and used the word intercession and many may have heard of the term prophetic intercession. To a high percentage of people, intercession means prayer, and use the two words interchangeably. Some may have wondered if there actually is a difference between the two, and if so, what it is. Well address that by taking a look at the definition of both words and comparing them.
According to the Miriam-Webster Online Dictionary (http://www.webster.com/), the word Intercession is described as 1 : the act of interceding; 2 : prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another. The word prayer is described as 1 a (1) : an address (as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought (said a prayer for the success of the voyage) (2) : a set order of words used in praying b : an earnest request or wish; 2 : the act or practice of praying to God or a god ; 3 : a religious service consisting chiefly of prayers - often used in plural; 4 : something prayed for.
From what we see here, the definition of intercession includes the word prayer, but extends beyond that to include petitioning and entreating on anothers behalf. However, the definition of prayer makes no mention of the word intercession.
There are many ways in which the Lord speaks to His people, i.e. dreams, visions, impressions in our spirit, His still small voice, etc., and He often speaks to us while we are seeking Him in our quiet time or "prayer closet". We may be seeking God in prayer and suddenly receive a vision, feel prompted to declare something out loud, or perform a symbolic action. We may feel led of the Lord to bind or loose a certain thing pertaining to a situation.
This is getting the mind of God on how to successfully pray for a thing. Of course, we should test the spirits behind any communication we are receiving and measure it against the Word of God, as we know that not everything we receive is from the Lord.
Prophetic intercession is quite biblical, and we can see examples of this in Joshua 6:1-5 and Ezekiel 4:1-8. This is by no means the extent of the examples found in the Word of God, but for the sake of this articles length, I only listed two.
I encourage you to study more examples in the Bible to enhance your understanding of this topic.
In prophetic intercession, we intercede according to the will and leading of the Holy Spirit. Although the Lord is sovereign, He desires to partner with us to accomplish His will on the earth. Obedience to His leading accomplishes great things in the spirit realm and causes advancement in the Kingdom of God.
