Finding the One

By Sharon Vlacich

Most single Christians at some point in their life dream of the day when they meet that special someone that they can settle down and spend the rest of their life with. This waiting time can be very difficult for some people as they see their friends getting married while they are dealing with loneliness and may question if God even has marriage as part of His plan for their life. If you have a desire to be married, it is safe to say that God has marriage as part of His plan for you. People whom God has called to remain single are very content in their heart to do so and have no desire to marry because the need is not there.

How Long, O Lord?

One of the most difficult things during this time can be the wait, especially if you have waited a very long time, and one of the most dangerous things can be taking things into your own hands. I believe that during this season you can have peace while you are waiting. There can be several reasons why you haven't met this person yet. One may be that you had never asked God for a spouse. The Bible says ask and you will receive (Mt 7:8). Since you are asking according to His will for your life, you know that He will hear you and give you what you asked Him for (1 Jn 5:14). Another critical factor is timing, so its important to exercise the fruit of the Spirit, which is patience. By patience the promise was obtained (Heb 6:15). Another factor may be that something is blocking you from meeting this person. Regardless of the reason, trusting God with all of the details is the first thing to do.

Assuming you have asked God to give you a mate and you are trusting Him for every detail, it is trusting Him can bring the peace that you need in your heart at this time, as you know He is working it out. I personally believe that this is a very good time for prayer and fasting on some type of a regular basis. Although fasting cannot and never will "twist God's arm", it is very beneficial in the life of a believer for receiving guidance from the Lord and receiving breakthrough (Is 58). One of the things the enemy attempts to do is send a counterfeit into the life of a believer waiting on God for a mate. It is important to have God's guidance when you do meet someone as to be sure this is the person that He has sent into your life.

Helping God Out

Sometimes there is the question as to whether there is something we can be doing to help this process along, such as joining a Christian singles group, switching churches to one where there are more single Christians, or joining online Christian dating. While there are different viewpoints on this, it is very important to be sure it is something God is leading you to do. The point is that when you are in God's will, you will be in the right place in the right time.

Become a Fruit Inspector

When you meet someone that may be the likely candidate, check with God and also check for peace in your heart about it. Check with other Christian believers who are mature in the Lord to get confirmation, and don't forget that the Lord says that you will know the person by their fruit (Mt 12:33).
