Dream On!
By Sharon Vlacich
Dreams have long been a fascinating subject for centuries and are one of the very common ways God speaks to His people today, as He did thousands of years ago in the Old and New Testaments. However, He did not limit this means of communication only to His people, but to unbelievers as well. We see this in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 20:3, when God gave the king a warning in a dream because Abraham, fearing for his life, told the king that his wife Sarah was his sister.
In the NT, God directed Joseph thorough dreams, and spoke to Pilate's wife in a dream about Jesus. Throughout scripture we see examples too numerous to list in this article, where we are able to see that this has been a very common way that God communicates to man. In Joel 2:28 it states in the last days God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh and old men will dream dreams.
In reading the entire scripture, it expresses that young and old, men, women and children, will have God's Spirit poured out on them. Therefore, this scripture is not implying that only old men will dream dreams. We can also see from scripture that one of God's purposes for giving dreams is when He speaks to man in various ways but they are not perceiving it (Job 33:14-18), to warn ( also in Job 33:14-18) and to direct and comfort. Before we go any further, let us first establish that not all dreams are from the Lord. They can come from the natural man from the busyness of the day, and from the enemy for the primary purpose of deception. Because of this we must test the spirit behind the dream as God's Word instructs. One of the means we use to do this is measuring it against the Word of God and His character.
